Dr. Barrientos specializes in cosmetic, general and reconstructive plastic surgery for patients of all ages with a concentration in cosmetics and reconstructive surgery. Long story short, I had surgery out of state, Miami to be exact. I return back to NY without my drainages (nurses took them out a few days after surgery) and I ended up catching three or more infections and no one from the Upstate NY area, as far as plastic surgeons, wanted to take my case. What to Expect During a Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation involves using breast implants or fat transfer to enhance your breasts. A breast augmentation procedure includes the following steps:
Step 1: Anesthesia
First you will be given medications for your comfort during the surgery. Your doctor will recommend which medication will be best. Options include general anesthesia and intravenous sedation.
Step 2: Incision
During your appointment(s) before your procedure, you and your plastic surgeon will have communication about which incision options are appropriate for your desired outcome. Incisions will be made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. Dr. Barrientos will speak to you about the best options for your incisions including: inframammary fold (the fold under the breast), periareolar incision (along the areolar edge), and axillary incision (in the armpit).
Step 3: Inserting and Placing the Breast Implant
The method chosen for inserting and positioning the breast implants depends on the type of implant (saline and silicone gel), your body type, enhancement desired and your doctor’s recommendations. A breast implant can be inserted into a pocket sub-mammary/ sub-glandular (directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle) or sub-muscular (under the pectoral muscle).
Step 4: Closing Incisions
Incisions are closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue and with sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape to close the skin. Over time the incision lines will fade but the quality of how the scar will heal depends on many things, including your genetics, exposure of your body to nicotine and infection.

How long does breast enhancement last?
Breast Lift
In general, patients are usually able to enjoy their breast lift results for about 10 – 15 years, though some women go much longer before a revision is needed. Everyone is different and Dr. Barrientos can speak to you about your personal expectations.
Breast Augmentation
It is important to understand that breast implants do not last forever and you should not plan to have them in for your entire lifetime. In general they are usually removed anywhere between 10 to 20 years after the initial surgery.
Breast Reduction
Most patients experience a permanent reduction in their breast size following surgery, as the tissue that is removed should not regrow. Keep in mind, however, the breast reduction procedure does not stop the aging process, and you may notice sagging over time.
How long does it take breast augmentation scars to heal?
On average, the full recovery period after a breast augmentation surgery takes about four to six weeks, with the final appearance of scars taking up to six months to a year. Because everyone is different – recovery time can vary for each individual. Some factors that determine healing time include but are not limited to: placement, size and type of implant. Dr. Barrientos and his staff will discuss your specific timeline.
